Experience

Hart Plaza

Originally planned as a grassy lawn area in 1924, it wasn’t until the 70’s that Hart Plaza was conceptualized and brought to life by Isamu Noguchi. Hart Plaza has become, almost unintentionally, a tribute to the strength of people - memorials in the plaza include “Gateway to Freedom”, recognizing Detroit’s role in helping emancipated slaves into Canada, and “Transcending”, a giant arch celebrating American Labor. What this is all means for Movement is a palpable energy in the air. Whether in the amphitheater, next to the river, or enjoying the massive underground bunker, we are not separate from our past, from our tactile environment - we are in the continuum.

Stages

Movement has 5 stages, each with their own distinct personality. Located just off the main entrance, The Stargate Stage is distinctly Detroit, with lifelong friends sound-tracking a city-wide block party. The Resident Advisor Underground Stage, with its brutalist architecture and concrete walls, makes it the perfect home for angular Techno. Located amongst the trees, the Red Bull Presents Stage showcases myriad styles; Funk, Hip-Hop, Breakbeats, Ghettotech, it’s all welcome here. The Pyramid Stage, positioned opposite Red Bull along the river, is the perfect summer backdrop. The breeze coming off the water perfectly compliments the hybrid Tech-House accompaniment. Finally, The Movement Stage, located in the amphitheater, is the crown jewel. Here is where you’ll see the big players, the legends, and those who have earned their stripes.

Tito’s River Garden

Even the most diehard festival goers need some downtime to recharge, and Tito’s River Garden provides the perfect environment. Tucked away in the shade along the river, Tito’s River Garden offers an oasis on the grounds. Serviced by a number of craft brewers, the River Garden is the ideal place to drift off under the shade of the summer sun.

Movement Artist-In-Residence: Kevin Lyons

Internationally acclaimed artist Kevin Lyons brings his iconic Monsters to Hart Plaza for this year's Movement Artist-In-Residence program, in partnership with 1xRUN. Lyons's signature characters can be found on murals across the globe, from New York to Paris, Spain, and Japan. As a designer, the Brooklyn native has had an illustrious career working as Creative Director for Nike, Converse, and Urban Outfitters, and Design Director for Stussy worldwide as well as Art Director for Girl Skateboards. Lyons has also won an Emmy for his work on PBS's "Avec Eric" and even received a Golden Lion at the Cannes Film Festival. For Movement, Kevin will be designing and painting a large scale mural inspired by his appreciation for Detroit's musical heritage and culture. "Ever since I first started coming to Detroit for my very first Murals In The Market, I have been obsessed with the vast, insane musical history of the city," says Lyons. "Also my Monsters love a great party, and what better a place for a colorful crew of misfits to rave and dance and carry on than Movement in a city dubbed Techno City and where they already feel right at home. We can't wait!" Be sure to check out Kevin's Monsters installation at the amphitheater near the Pyramid Stage and the Official Merch tent to grab a Movement x Kevin Lyons t-shirt.

Movement Studio powered by Sweetwater

In many ways, electronic music is the story of technological advancement and human ingenuity in concert. Technology continues to be an essential ingredient, not only to the creation, but also in the consumption of music. The Movement Studio was born out of both a love of technology and a responsibility to steward our collective knowledge. We are excited to once again welcome you into our Studio and showcase industry leaders in music production. Ten brands will be present, covering everything from emerging DJ technologies to modular synth production. They will be providing product demonstrations and hands-on interaction. Festival goers of all kinds are welcome, from the studio wizard to the uninitiated novice. This year, we have partnered with Sweetwater, a leader in music commerce, to power this year’s Studio.

Friends

Mostly importantly, Movement is a place to spend time with loved ones, to turn strangers into friends, and to be unabashedly yourself. It’s the people who make the festival what it is, and with your help, our Tapestry of Techno grows more vibrant each and every year.
